Facts Behind Environmental Injustice
Environmental injustice is a big social problem. When people are not treated fairly due to the color of their skin or their nationality this is a big issue. Alexander Djerassi knows that this is still a problem that is around today. These are some of the downfalls of this injustice according to Djerassi.
Some things lead to this injustice. While there are many factors that will impact it there are things in the environment that are leading to this discrimination. The setting is just right for this to happen. It can be old views that were never changed or other factors that will lead to the acceptance of this type of behavior. There can be some other factors at play too. This includes any regulatory policies that were misguided or that no longer apply. It can also be unequal enforcement. Whatever the reason, it can not be tolerated any longer.
There are some environmental changes that seem to affect some people more than others. Climate change and the pollution in the environment seem to affect those in low income areas. Most of the people living in these low income areas are minorities. They have to deal with pollution and there is not much they can do to change things. The effects of pollution are felt in these neighborhoods. There is muddy landscaping which makes it difficult to grow anything or for any structures to stand. There is also poison in the soil which makes it difficult to grow vegetables. The drinking water may also be polluted. This will be harmful to plant life and animals. Those that are exposed to this pollution over the long term will see the negative health impact it has. They may have respiratory disease and it will put them at a higher risk for lung cancer and other illnesses. Those that are exposed to this are often minorities. There is a difference in the households with different incomes. Those that tend to make more money do not have to worry about pollution. They are safe from these toxins. It seems that their communities have higher standards and they are better protected. People that live in these households are often upper class and white. There are other households that do not enjoy the same thing. These are the households that are subject to pollution. They are often the poorer households made from minorities.
Everyone in the United States has some fundamental rights. These rights allow them to live and pursue happiness. One of the ways to be happy is to live in clean areas. When a person is forced to deal with pollution and the acceptance of this pollution it is going against their basic rights. These are some of the differences in environmental inequality that people face, according to Alexander Djerassi. These differences can mean the difference between being healthy and being subject to disease. Those that are in the homes need to join the fight for equality so that everyone can have a healthy environment.
