5 Ways to Improve Your Productivity at Work

Whether you’re self employed, own your own business, or work for someone else, one of the biggest challenges you’ll face each day is figuring out how to keep yourself productive. The world we live in is very distracting – we have smartphones that fit in our pockets and can essentially do all the things our computers can. Most people have a constant stream of notifications coming through on their phones whether from social media, app notifications, or even just traditional calls. 1. Caffeine

One of the first things I do each day is make myself a fresh cup of coffee. I love everything about the experience of making and drinking coffee, from grinding my own beans, to heating up my milk. This is something I’ve only just started doing myself, but it’s made such a huge difference in my productivity. Setting my phone to Airplane mode makes me completely unavailable to all notifications, phone calls and interruptions. I tend to choose in advance a time limit for keeping my phone on Airplane mode and then once I’ve done that amount of work I get a break to check things on my phone. The great thing about doing a Pomodoro style work sprint is that you can choose work and rest periods that work for you. 

3. Make Sure Things are Well Calibrated

One thing I find really important to focus on for improving my productivity is my posture – so my office chair and desk height if I’m working at a standing desk. Ensuring everything is properly aligned allows me to feel more energised and focused during my work day. 

4. Be Realistic About What You Can Achieve

The biggest productivity killer for me is when I’ve bitten off way more than I can chew. I wind up feeling overwhelmed, stressed and like no matter how much I do, I’m not making any real progress. Setting an achievable amount of tasks makes me more productive as I cross off things I get more momentum to help me moving forward. It’s taken me a long time to realise a more compact to-do list allows me to get more done. 

5. Get a Coach

I’ve found being an entrepreneur a thrilling but challenging journey. There’s a lot of up and downs, and it can be hard to keep your long term goals in mind especially if you’re working alone. For this reason I suggest every one wanting to take their employment or business to the next level consider investing in a coach. Find someone who resonates with you, who inspires you and someone who holds you accountable to your goals. This will be worth more than their weight in gold.
