Things Will Change Moving Forward for Recycling

All things related to recycling are about to change. The EU is implementing new rules and regulations in the years to come. A new grading system will start in 2030, using the DfR (Design for Recycling) systems, materials will be graded. Grade A will be 95% recyclable, grade B will be 80% recyclable, grade C will be 70% recyclable. Anything below 70% will be technically non recyclable. DfR rules to be further defined through delegated acts by 2028.

Paperboard and its unique fibers are gaining popularity throughout brands. Made from wood and recycled fibers, paperboard can be recycled up to 10 times. First, raw materials are delivered to the paperboard mills, then the materials are processed and moved to innovative packaging, then they are transported to retailers, brands and consumers. Once the consumers are finished with the packaging they recycle it and the process starts over.

In 2022 the European Commission proposed the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR.) This regulation is aimed at preventing and reducing waste and improving packaging recyclability and recycling. This new regulation went into effect in the year 2025.

By 2035 all packaging must be recycled at scale in the EU. Right now 87% of paperboard is recycled in Europe while only 42% of plastic is recycled. Moving forward, single use plastic items will face restrictions. By 2040 most plastic packaging and parts must meet increased recycled content targets. Learn more at Graphic Packaging International.
